How to use Citric acid at home

Best dissolved in water to make a 5 or 10% citric acid solution. To make a 5% solution dissolve 50g into 1L warm water. To make a 10% solution dissolve 100g into 1L warm water. This solution is shelf stable, If you are going to make your cleaner ahead of time be sure to label it.

If you have high mineral content in your water, you will need to descale your appliances more often. Water hardness levels can be checked with your local council

Treating water spots on shower glass: Make a 5% solution and spray the clean area to be treated. Allow the mix to fully contact the area and sit for 20-30 minutes. Scrub clean with a non-scratch scrubby suitable for glass. Repeat if required or use a 10% solution if the minerals are very built up.

Descaling your kettle: Boil a full kettle, add 1 Tablespoon citric acid and stir to dissolve. Stand for 10-20 minutes or longer if you have a lot of mineral build up. Boil again then discard the water. Rinse with fresh water. Bonus, a descaled kettle will boil more quietly!

Descale and deep clean your washing machine: Run a long hot empty wash with 1/2 cup citric acid for top loaders and 1/4 cup for front loaders.

Descale and deep clean your dishwasher: Run a long hot empty wash with 1/4 cup citric acid. Fill your powder dispenser and add the rest to the bottom of the dishwasher.

Descale your coffee machine (ie Nespresso): Add 1-2 Tablespoons to the warm water in the water tank. Feed this through your machine. Repeat if the water is still dirty. Flush with a further tank of fresh water.

Storage and safety

Store in a labelled airtight container. Citric acid will draw water so it is important to keep the lid tightly sealed. Keep away from children and pets. Labels for jars can be found here

Figgy & Co. citric acid is food grade, however it is processed alongside other powdered home cleaners. Therefore we cannot rule out cross contamination. Do not use this Citric acid as a food.
