The DIY laundry pack: homemade laundry powder and soaker the easy way
There's two great reasons to make your own laundry staples - firstly it is cost effective and time saving! Once you get the hang of making your own laundry powder and laundry soaker it will take you only minutes to enjoy the feeling of smugness after making months worth of washing staples to have on hand Second, if you have skin issues like eczema or psoriasis then what your skin is exposed to really matters! Having total ingredient transparency is upper most to ensuring you are keeping your routine itch free. Knowing that you can craft everything you need to keep your cloths clean without any nasties will give you peace of mind!
Most regular laundry products are loaded with unnecessary fillers and additives—and besides not actually cleaning, they can be the cause of skin irritation from the residues left on your clothing, sheets and towels. Sensitive skin is common, and it really can make your miserable! That's why we created the Figgy Laundry range: so you can get your clothes clean without all the extras you don't want. - 500ml bottle of home cleaning castile soap,
- 1.6kg of washing soda,
- 1.3kg of baking soda,
- 500g of oxygen bleach,
- 400g of borax,
- Figgy bar soap,
- Easy to follow recipe card and a set of laundry labels to add a bit of style!

You will need two air tight containers for storing your laundry powder and soaker with a minimum capacity of 700g - a big glass jar or plastic container is perfect!
Making tips for Best Results
The laundry products you are making are concentrated! Because we leave out the fillers you will find a little goes a long way and what you make will last a long time. Check out the how to use section of washing machine cycle selection and washing temperature advice.
If texture matters to you, a food processor will give you a nice, even grain (just remember to rinse well before any food prep!). Or, you can use a bowl to mix - your powder will work just as well, though it may be a little lumpy and bumpy. We have put all our best tips together in this making blog.

Getting the best from your DIY laundry powder is easy!
Laundry powder
the laundry powder you make is concentrated – with no fillers and no funny business like optical brighteners! For an average 6kg load, use 1 Tablespoon (20g) of your powder. Select a wash that is at least 30 degrees and a longer cycle. When you remove harsh chemicals a warmer, longer wash with safe cleaning allies will give you lovely clean clothes with happy skin!
Dirtier clothing
Use 2 tablespoons per load and select warmer water. Again choose a longer wash cycle, or add in a wash hold or soak. The extra contact time and water temperature means you are able to get dirtier clothes clean without using harsh detergents.
Generally dingy or colourful stains
The laundry soaker can be used for bucket soaking and as an in wash booster. Dissolve 2-4 tablespoons in a bucket of warm to hot water and soak your items for at least 2 hours or overnight. Our active ingredient Oxygen bleach releases hydrogen peroxide to break down stains – it is very effective on stains like blood, coffee and red wine & won’t strip colours.
Keeping whites bright
the easy way to keep white and light coloured clothing looking fresh is to use 1-2 tablespoons in wash when you are selecting a warmer and longer cycle. If you are choosing a shorter wash cycle the time will not allow enough contact time – save your boost for a different day.
Grimy and gross
Pre-soak any really soiled items with 1 tablespoon of washing powder dissolved in a bucket of warm water. This will give you a more concentrated cleaning solution without need to bring in the big guns for a whole load – you’ll use less washing powder and concentrate the cleaning only on the items that need it.
Spot the cleaning
Any small marks on an otherwise clean item can be cleaned with Figgy’s bar soap directly onto the stain. For oily stains wet up the bar soap and rub it directly onto the oil – this binds the oil and soap together without adding water and allows the oil to be washed away. For all other stains simply rinse under the tap then rub with the bar soap to make a lather. Rub to work the soap into the stain. Tough stains can have the lather sit on the stain with 15-30 mins contact time before rinsing.
Our skin contacts our laundry wash all day long
When we have irritated skin, the last thing it needs is laundry residues touching it 24/7. What it needs is a break to heal and recover. The ingredients used to formulate Figgy’s laundry powder are chosen because they are effective cleaners AND kind to skin. Typical laundry detergents are effective but also made cheaply with irritating fillers and with harsh cleaners that upset the skins surface.

We get it – getting a dud recipe when what you want is a hard working cleaner is annoying to say the least. At Figgy all our recipes are tried and tested – we’re from a health and science background and you bet we use this to make sure our formulations are spot on – for great results and happy skin! At a minimum what you need is a bowl and whisk and two airtight jars. A food processor makes a finer powder for your laundry powder – its fast and perfectly safe to mix in your regular kitchen whizz. Just give it a good wash out after – this is to ensure essential oils are removed.
