Cleaning the microwave can be a bit of a hassle, its cramped and awkward – we get it. This microwave cleaning guide that will change all that – in record time! Once you use this method to clean your microwave, you won’t go back to your old ways!
We all know our microwave might just get MVP of our mealtime hustle, whether it’s reheating last night’s leftovers or saving the day when the school run’s gone a bit haywire. But let’s be honest, it doesn’t always get the love back it deserves, especially when it comes to cleaning. Yep, we’re talking about those butter splatters when softening goes wrong, or the baked beans that decided to explode just when you weren’t looking. Sound familiar?
Here’s the good news: cleaning your microwave doesn’t have to be a big deal, in fact it can be super quick. It definitely doesn’t need harsh chemicals, and with just a few simple steps, you can get it looking fresh and ready for action again – no scrubbing required. The best thing is you avoid any harsh chemical residues hanging around your food the next time you reheat it.
Before we dive in, you’ll need to get yourself a few simple, all natural ingredients like baking soda, home cleaning castile soap, your favourite essential oil, and our Everyday Spray.
Step 1: Steam clean the microwave interior
It might seem that your microwave is destined to smell like a mingle of all the foods its cooked. But we can fix that. You’ll love this cleaning method, not only is it easy, baking soda goes to work removing old cooking smells very effectively – we reckon if could almost be considered a life hack!
- Take a microwave-safe container like al 500ml Pyrex jug and fill it with a cup of water, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, and optionally 2-3 drops of essential oil – lemon is great for this. Heat on high again for two minutes. But here’s the trick: when the beep goes off, don’t rush to open the door. Give it a good five minutes to let the steam work its magic. This steam sauna is softening all that gunk that’s been stubbornly hanging on – trust me, it’ll make wiping it off a breeze.
- When you open the door, remove the plate and you will be left with a quick and easy wipe-out. If you want some more oomph before wiping out, you can also opt to spray the inside with our Everyday Spray and leave for a minute before wiping out. If you have any food caught in the corner cracks, use a toothpick to scoop this out.
Step 2: Wash the microwave turntable
Now that the inside is looking good, it’s time to show the microwave turntable some love. This piece does a lot of heavy lifting, rotating your food to make sure everything heats evenly. But, it’s also prone to catching spills and crumbs, so let’s give it a good clean.
- Take the turntable out and wash it with castile soap – it’s gentle but effective, perfect for getting rid of any stuck-on-food. Just a quick scrub in the sink, and you’ll have it looking like new. Return the turntable with care – these tend to chip easily. Line up the lugs to make sure your plate sits flat and spins properly – there’s nothing worse than a wobbly turntable when you’re trying to reheat your morning coffee.
Step 3: Cleaning the exterior of the microwave
Finally, let’s not forget the outside of your microwave. It’s the first thing you see, and keeping it clean helps maintain that fresh kitchen feel.
- Wipe down the exterior of the microwave with our Everyday Spray or a soapy solution will also be great here. Finish the front glass with a vinegar based cleaner – we like to use a mix of our strong white vinegar and water and buff off with a lint free cloth.
Once the outside is sparkling, take a moment to appreciate your handiwork. A clean microwave isn’t just about aesthetics – it also ensures your food heats more evenly and prevents any lingering smells from transferring to your meals.
Why regular microwave cleaning is important
Now that your microwave is clean and fresh, let’s talk about why it’s worth keeping up with this routine. Microwaves can easily become grimy if food particles and spills aren’t cleaned up regularly. Those splatters and spills can also cause lingering odours, which can affect the taste and smell of your food.
By using this 5 minute method to keep your microwave clean, you’re not just improving its performance – you’re also making sure your bestie doesn’t get a side of rancid butter in their reheated coffee when they visit! Plus, a clean microwave is just nicer to use. It’s a win-win!
