Vacuum Clog? How to Clean a Vacuum Cleaner in 3 Easy Steps
Vacuum not sucking like it should?
Can you remember back to when you first got your vacuum cleaner? Did it suck so well it lifted your carpet a little? Let’s turn back time and get those fresh vacuum lines again!
We know that a dusty environment is bad for our lungs – those tiny particles can make their way deep into our lungs causing irritation and can set off asthma. That said, its good to acknowledge, that your vacuum when working properly, does an especially important job for keeping your home healthy. Beyond keeping your carpet looking tidy from the mess you can easily see, a well working vacuum will also remove the potentially harmful dust you won’t see as well.
When it comes to maintaining your vacuum and its suction strength, the basics are this: Any parts that can be removed and washed should be. Be mindful of electrics as these can’t be submerged. If you need to, use the manual that came with your machine for guidance if needed or Google search your model. What can’t be washed should be checked and cleared of blockages.
Even a poorly working vacuum can be saved from the bin by giving it a deep clean. So before you throw your vacuum away because its clogged follow our three steps to fixing your vacuum.
Important cleaning tip to control dust:
Please be mindful of unleashing dust into the air as you clean vacuum parts, especially if you’re asthmatic or have breathing problems. To keep dust under control, you want to submerge the dusty part into soapy water not run it under the tap or knock it out. Soap works to control dust because it changes the water surface tension. Without soap, dust will initially be repelled by water, puffing into the air. But soapy water allows the dust to be saturated and this will stop the dust from puffing up into the air when your vacuum parts hit the water. Controlling the dust is as easy as filling your sink with warm water and adding few pumps of castile soap. Now there will be no dust in the air, that’s better for you and your lungs!
Three Easy Steps to Unclog your Vacuum cleaner
1. Check and Clean the Dust Canister or Replace the Bag
If your vacuum isn’t sucking well, the most common cause is a full bag or canister. For bagged vacuums, check if the bag needs replacing or emptying. For bagless models, empty and wash the canister. Ensure you empty the canister or bag outside to prevent the dust clouds from forming inside your home, which can be harmful to breathe in. By emptying the canister or bag it not only helps with suction but also with any odours. Use a mixture of water and white vinegar to rinse the canister and let it air dry completely.
2. Check the Hose for Blockages
Test your machines suction by removing the hose and placing your flat hand against the opening where the hose attaches. This should feel like maximum suction. Then attach the hose, pop your hand over the end and compare the suction strength. If it feels weaker, you might have a blockage that needs sorting. Use a broom handle or flexible brush to gently push out any clogs.
3. Clean the Filters
Even a moderately dirty filter impacts suction – a bit like sucking a super thick smoothie through a straw – it just won’t work. Some filters are washable – if so submerge it in water with a bit of castile soap. Squeeze and agitate, then rinse under the tap until the water runs clear. Air dry thoroughly, this can take a day or more. If your filter isn’t washable, replace it.
After these easy steps, your machine will be back in action with better suck for a healthier, dust and dander free home. Below are the steps to deep clean your machine that you can do along with the steps outlined above.
Maintaining your vacuum cleaner for longevity
Routine Deep Cleaning
Beyond regularly emptying your canister and checking your filters, your vacuum will need maintenance at least once a year if not more often to keep it working like it should. It is worth while to forward planning this kind of cleaning after giving your house a decent vacuum, because your machine could be out of action for a day or more if filters need time to air dry. When you are ready, give your vacuum a thorough deep clean by checking the filters and hose and disassemble as many parts as possible before washing them to remove built up dust. Use an all purpose natural cleaning solution like castile soap to remove dirt and dust safely. Remember to ensure everything is dry before reassembling.
Wipe Down the Outside and Wheels
Your vacuum rides its way up and down your house with every use, so make sure it’s not making its own mess. Wipe down the outside and wheels with a damp cloth and a bit of our Everyday Cleaning Spray or Castile Soap diluted in water. This keeps your vacuum clean and prevents it from spreading dirt.
Wash Attachments
Wash any attachments with warm, soapy water and let them dry completely. This ensures they’re not harbouring any dust or debris that can reduce your vacuum cleaners efficiency.
Clean the Brush Roll
If you’ve got long hair, it’s amazing how much can get it wrapped around the roller and slow it down. If you can take out the roller brush do so, otherwise do this step with it still attached. Use scissors to cut the tangle of hair and cotton etc. Then gently pull them out until the roll is clear. If the brush roll is removable, wash it just like you did with the filter for a thorough clean.
Natural Cleaning Products:
Castile Soap does a great job of cleaning even very dirty vacuums. Soap easily takes care of dust by quickly saturating it with water so it can’t puff into the air. The bonus is that castile soap not only keeps your vacuum cleaner free from harsh chemicals but also helps in maintaining a non-toxic home environment.
By following these steps, you’ll keep your vacuum cleaner in peak condition, ensuring it continues to perform effectively for years to come. Happy vacuuming!
